Introducing Kids to Woodworking Through Kits

November 20th, 2010 — 9:13am

Introduce a kid to woodworking is a wonderful idea, but how can you do it safely? An easy way of doing this is through woodworking kits that don’t require any tools to be used. Even someone with little or no woodworking experience, that wants to start their kids off with some easy woodworking projects, can do so with woodcraft project kits. These are typically available at stores like Michaels, JoAnns, Toys R Us, Amazon, Wal-Mart, and Target. Below are 5 easy woodworking projects that can be used to introduce children to the craft:

  1. Clothes Hooks – To do this project, all you need is a 1″ x 4″ x 12″ board and some metal hooks (one- or two-prong) to screw into the board. Apart from that, you will need stickers or paint so that piece can be decorated to match their room or even reflect their current interest. The supervisor or adult will have to screw the board onto the wall and screw the hooks into the wood, but even the un-handiest of parents should be able to manage. An adhesive can be used as an alternative to screwing the pieces together, but you need to make sure you use some that is strong enough to attach to the wall but without damaging it when it is removed.
  2. Memory Clock Kit – This kit normally comes with all the required pieces for the clock as well as the necessary instructions. Kids can embellish the clock after putting it together using various items to make it unique. Photos, charms, and sports mementos can all be used for this.
  3. Mini-craft kits – These mini-kits can be found for about a dollar each at Michaels Craft Stores. They are small-scale boats, cars, airplanes, and other items which are easily glued together and painted. However, because they contain small parts, they should be avoided for children under five. .
  4. 3-D Wooden Puzzles are available in many different forms, some of which are animals, buildings dinosaurs, planes, and boats. I remember putting dinosaur 3-D wooden puzzles together as a kid and loved it. The pieces can also be decoupaged or painted before assembly.
  5. Smaller Clothes Hooks Project – If you have a small space you want to fill, you could put
a unique single clothes hook in it by starting with a pre-cut and sanded wooden shape
such as a heart, square, circle, rectangle, or diamond. These can be found at many craft
stores. Then you can add the one- or two-prong hook to the shape and let the kids paint,
draw on, add stickers, or embellish in any way they desire.

These easy woodworking projects kits for kids will allow even the most unskilled parent to introduce their kids to easy woodworking. What makes them worthwhile is that they are safe, low cost, and fun.
